What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis confirms the mind and body connection. Although researchers have had a difficult time agreeing on a clear definition of hypnosis, most do agree that during hypnosis there is an altered state of consciousness in which the patient experiences total mental and physical relaxation. It appears to affect how your brain communicates with your body through nerve impulses, hormones and body chemicals. When you are in a hypnotic state, you are more open to suggestions, which can be used to modify behavior, reduce pain and improve health and well-being (web article by the Mayo Clinic, June 24, 2007).
Why Should I Consider Hypnosis?
- There are many reasons why you should consider hypnotherapy…
- Because it is safe and it’s effectiveness has been recognized by numerous sources, including the American Medical Association and the American Journal of Psychiatry.
- Because you want an alternative to medication or invasive treatment.
- Because the there are no negative side effects.
- Because you are frustrated with traditional interventions that don’t seem to help.
Please note: If you want to use hypnosis for pain management or any other medical condition, please consult with your doctor beforehand. A referral from your physician will be required prior to your hypnosis consultation. As part of our commitment to your care, you can expect that we will work closely with your doctor.
Why Would I Want Hypnosis?
Well, there are many uses for hypnosis. It has been proven to help with chronic and acute pain relief, stress reduction, stop smoking, pre surgery, weight management, IBS, cancer, fears and phobias, past traumas, improving performance, health, confidence, relationships, sports, concentration, recall and creativity, overcoming bad habits and positive self expression.
Who Can Be Hypnotized?
Virtually everyone, but some are more readily hypnotizable than others. Your ability to be hypnotized depends upon a number of factors, such as your willingness to be hypnotized, strength of your particular need and your trust and confidence in the therapist.
Does Hypnosis Solve All Problems Automatically?
Hypnosis can be very effective for many challenges (see partial list above) and is ‘magical’, but not magic. It takes a highly skilled hypnotist and a client that is motivated and ready to have a change in their life. A hypnotist cannot make anyone do anything that do not want to do.
How Many Sessions Do I Need To Have To See Any Changes?
Your session(s) are designed to meet your needs. You will notice a change after one session. Depending on your needs, you most likely would have anywhere from one to four sessions.
What Can I Expect When I Come For Hypnosis?
Expect your initial hypnosis session to last about an hour and a half. You will have an intake form to complete and then I will discuss with you what it is you would like to achieve from your hypnosis session. I will explain hypnosis and eliminate any misconceptions and fears that you may have. Your subsequent sessions will be approximately one hour in length.
